So you forgot to RSVP for SXSW parties…don’t fret too much, because The Horn’s got you covered for the hottest parties that don’t require notice, a badge, or money.
Monday 3/12
Don’t have a badge? Don’t worry. IFC has you covered Monday and Tuesday with free beer happy hour from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. with music provided by DJ Car Stereo. Not only do they give you free booze, but they also have comedy routines lined up from 8 p.m. – 10 p.m.
Tuesday 3/13
Noon – 2 a.m. All Tamara’s Parties 1.0 is showcasing 33 bands on 11 stages at Cheer Up Charlie’s. You’re not going to want to miss this set with bands from around the globe including Rebuilding the Rights of Statues from China, The Migrant from Denmark, BITCHES from the UK, and not to mention all the other great local and national acts, including my friends in Villette. This is a show you definitely need to catch.
Wednesday 3/14
Kicking off the music section of SXSW, Bridge Club Music has the best freebie filled gig at The GameStreamer Next Level Party Jam at Shangri La. Starting at 11:30 a.m. there are two stages, with 12 bands, free beer, free tacos, free photo booth pictures, and more. The grooves include Javelin, Das Racist, and Beach Fossils.
Thursday 3/15
The Pitchfork Day party is being thrown down at Mohawks with electronic bands El-P, SBTRKT, The War on Drugs, and 12 other body-moving bands. Be sure to check it out starting at noon.
Friday 3/15
Under the Radar magazine ends their three-day party with headliners Of Montreal and free rum, courtesy of RedRum and VooDoo Spiced Rum. The parties are at Flamingo Cantina, but don’t forget to stop by the other two days for free beer from Sapporo USA. One of my personal favorites, The Drums, headline Wednesday and Chairlift takes over on Thursday. The parties all start at noon and feature six bands each day.
The Pan American Festival puts on a free show featuring Paul Wall at the Mexican American Culture Center on 600 River Street. Check out the mash-up of Latin fusion, Tejano, and rap starting at 5 p.m.
Saturday 3/16
My beloved fashionistas down at Charm School Vintage/Coco Coquette are having a fancy shindig down at their store. Not only do they have rotating indoor and outdoor stages, but they’ll have free beer, cocktails, vodka, margaritas, and bagels. The festivities start at noon and last until 8 p.m.
Red Bull is throwing the Thre3Style Showcase at the lot on 8th & Trinity with doors opening at 7 p.m. featuring Z-Trip and other talented DJs, so get your dancing shoes on and head downtown.
Continuing the tradition, Urban Outfitters has their usual Back Lot Performances starting at noon. If you can’t check out the lineup for Saturday they’ve got you covered the whole week starting Wednesday.
