On the Cheap: Fourth of July events

Celebrate America's independence this week with these fun and cheap events.

Monday

If 2 for 1 burger night isn’t enough to get you to Austin Java, then head down for their music trivia night. Living in Austin gives even the most sheltered of us a little music cred, so try your luck and you could win a $20 gift certificate. The game starts at 7 p.m.

Tuesday

101X and Central Market teamed up to bring you free movies at the Central Market Café Park with a three-story high inflatable movie screen. This week is “Captain America” starting at 8 p.m. They’ll be serving up $2.50 draught beers and having sweet meal deals.

Wednesday

It’s 4th of July, which means there will be plenty of parties to choose from. I don’t need to tell you how to celebrate our Nation’s holiday, but here are a few suggestions.

The Austin Symphonic Band puts on a great patriotic themed show at Old Settlers Park where there will be free watermelon, games, skydivers, and fireworks to end the night the good old-fashioned way starting a 8 p.m.

Roxy Roca is having a free show and will be serving up BBQ at 6 p.m. at the Black Heart on Rainey St.

The Highball is celebrating the birth of our country by playing party games all night including trivia and spelling bees for tons of great prizes. They’ll have happy hour all night, so show up and party.

Thursday

We all know you have a secret soft spot for Everclear, so why not see them live for free while drinking free refreshments at Waterloo Records at 5 p.m.? We know you don’t have a good excuse to miss a free show.

Later you can regain your street cred by heading over to Frank’s for some of Austin’s best hot dogs while listening to The Smiths and The Clash cover bands.

Friday

All you cosplayers need to gear up for this weekend’s Anime Overload at the Holiday Inn Austin Midtown. Compared to all the other conventions around the country this one is a steal.

If comics aren’t really your thing Cheer Up Charlies is having a free show with cheap drinks showcasing Sundress, Holy Wave, and more. Show starts at 8 p.m.

Saturday

Austin Flea an all Austin handmade and vintage market at Highball is benefitting Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas this Saturday. It’s Christmas in July this weekend, so go pick out some great gifts from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Later on that night, The Highball will be throwing a Boy Band vs. Pop Princess Dance Party at 10:30 p.m.

Sunday

If you didn’t have enough music trivia on Monday, Skinny’s Ballroom has got you covered starting at 6 p.m. Happy hour is all night and a $25 gift certificate is the prize.
