Saveur Seeking: Saigon Street
Neil visits Saigon Street, new food trailer on a once barren stretch of Austin's Airport Blvd. that has recently seen an influx of new and diverse food establishments. Saigon Street is one of these establishments with a menu consisting of classic Vietnamese street food.
If you drive along Austin’s Airport Boulevard you will see plenty of places to eat. Food options along this busy thoroughfare have, for the most part, consisted of fast food and taco trucks…until now. Over the last year there has been something happening along this somewhat run-down stretch of road. New food trailers and restaurants (Contigo, food trucks at the Mueller development, Kome, Your Mom’s Burger Bar, to name a few) have been popping up all over Airport Boulevard and offering a diverse spectrum of unique food. Saigon Street food trailer is one of these places.
Located across the street from a pawnshop and next to a used car dealership, Saigon Street might be in one of the more random spots you would expect to find a food trailer. This doesn’t stop loyal customers from coming out and chowing down on classic Vietnamese street food.
The trailer is owned and run by a mother, daughter, and aunt who pride themselves on running a family business and, for the most part, sticking to the basics when it comes to Vietnamese food. With tasty dishes such as the crispy char grill pork banh mi, lemongrass tofu, assorted spring and egg rolls, the women behind Saigon Street are not trying to present any kind of fusion dishes that attempt to seem edgy and new. The goal at this trailer is to use recipes passed down through the family and give customers an array of street food that’s typically found being sold by mobile vendors all over Vietnam. In addition to the normal menu they also have weekly specials that will often be a dish one may not expect. Everything I tasted at Saigon Street was very enjoyable, and as an avid meat eater I can boldly say my favorite dish was the lemongrass tofu (one customer told me she comes to Saigon Street three times a week just to eat this dish!).
Saigon Street is located at 5310 Airport Boulevard. Visit their WEBSITE for the menu, hours, and more!
