On the Cheap: Loteria, Kung Fu Olympics and Mojo Kickball

This week's On the Cheap features eccentric and cheap events in Austin.

Monday

This week is Go Texan Restaurant Round Up Week where local restaurants will be serving up special Texas menus and donating to food banks around the state. Places like 24 Diner, Bananarchy, Blue Dog Pizza, Max’s Wine Dive, and many more will be participating. Check out the official website to see all the participating vendors and see their specials.

Tuesday

Have you ever heard of mojo kickball? It’s kickball, tag, touch football and dodgeball all mixed up into one exciting playground pastime. The meet-up is at 8 p.m. where they’ll give rules and a quick tutorial for newcomers at Krieg Soft Ball Complex Field #4. There is a suggested donation of $3 that you can pay in person or online. Wednesday

Play Loteria with El Facial Hair Club de Austin at Mohawks starting at 7:30 p.m. for the club’s one-year anniversary. First scorecard is $5 and each additional is $1 with beer prizes and dancing. Open for all ages.

Thursday

Get ready for the free Glasses Gang Hip Hop show at ND at 501 Studios. The lineup includes The Lower Class, The Saturns, and more. The 18+ shindig starts at 9:30 p.m. with doors open at 9 p.m.

Friday

The Institution Theatre presents Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog live this Friday at 8 p.m. Tickets are just $10 and you can reserve them at their website

Saturday

Kung Fu Saloon is hosting their very own Kung Fu Olympics every Saturday during the Olympics benefitting Special Olympics of Texas. Registration is free and starts at 2 p.m. This week features giant 4-square and Streetfighter. Come down and play the games between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Champion gets prizes and gift certificates.

Once you’re done with the competition at Kung Fu Saloon spend some time at Zilker Park for Beats on the Green. You get free admission if you bring a non-perishable food donation to support the Capitol Area Food Bank of Texas. There will be plenty of DJ’s from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. along with outdoor games and nighttime disc golf. The event is all ages and pet friendly!

Sunday

There’s an 80’s Icon Costume Party at Elysium at 9:30 p.m. Dress up as your favorite idol, darn some 80’s fashion and dance the night away to your favorite 80’s pop singles. Blo Blow Dry Salon will even be on site to dish out free 80’s hairstyles. There will be prizes for the best dressed.
