Austin City Limits: 2012 Lineup Prediction (Updated 5/21)

On the eve of ACL dropping their lineup-revealing scratch tickets Zack Teibloom offers his prediction on what bands will be playing this years Austin City Limits Festival.

Note: This article is our prediction of the 2012 ACL Festival Lineup. However, as bands are announced over the coming weeks we will update with the actual lineup. We will release the bands revealed on the actual lineup as soon as they are announced. Scroll down below our prediction for the actual lineup.

Austin City Limits is one of the easier festival lineups to predict. We have the benefit of seeing who's played/playing other festivals and, by looking for holes in the late summer/fall tours, you can craft a decent guess. Possibly due to being scheduled at the tail end of summer, ACL typically has the biggest (and most obvious) overlap of festivals. If you are enough of a music nerd to make a venn diagram you will find many similarities between between Lollapalooza and ACL line-ups. Last year there were at least 14 bands in the middle, including two headliners, (Coldplay and My Morning Jacket) and a dozen mid-level bands (Cee Lo, Bright Eyes, Young the Giant, Smith Westerns, Nas & Damian Jr. Gong Marley, Death From Above 1979, Cold War Kids, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Fitz and the Tantrums, Foster the People, Cults.).

I think we'll get 2-4 of those Lolla headliners (Black Keys, RHCP, Jack White, Black Sabbath and Avicii), but it won't be Acivii, since ACL skews more hip hop acts than dance. The rest are a mix of Lollapalooza and Coachella bands, rumors, and bands that simply don't have a gig announced for October 12th-14th.

We're posting this on Thursday, May 17th, before the scratch off tickets give us our weekend clues tomorrow morning, and will update it as often as we can. If you have any suggestions to add Tweet to @Media_TheHorn or @ZackTeibloom. You can also email The Horn's Media/Music Editor Neil Ferguson (nferguson@readthehorn.com).
