Out of any college campus I can’t think of a better place than UT to do something like this. It is the bastion of liberalism in Texas.
A University of Texas student will soon be filing paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to start his own Super PAC named ‘Texans for a Better Tomorrow Tomorrow.’ This comes with the blessing of Stephen Colbert, from The Colbert Report last Thursday.
Paul “Howie” Benefiel first got the idea of creating a Super PAC when learning about the influence of bureaucracy in his government class and from watching The Colbert Report. “It got me thinking about how interests groups actually really do influence politics,” Benefiel said.
A Super PAC is an organization that can raise money and campaign for candidates with no limits on the amount of money raised. Colbert started his own fully functioning Super PAC named ‘Americans for a Better Tomorrow Tomorrow’, which appears on his satirical late night program.
Benefiel contacted Colbert by email to receive his help in making his own Super PAC at UT and received a response from The Colbert Report.
Colbert featured Benefiel’s email on air to the cheers of the audience, and granted him permission to start a Super PAC. Colbert also revealed his Super Pac Super Fun Pac boxes for sale, which include the documents to start a Super PAC, a t-shirt and Colbert Super Pac tube socks.
“The Colbert Report presents to people a way to be updated on events going on in our government in an entertaining way,” Benefiel said. “Getting people involved in civic responsibility had been notoriously hard. It takes effort for people to involve themselves in politics,” Benefiel said.
Benefiel wants to ignite students and get them involved in politics. He believes that people don’t really understand the effect of unlimited money in politics. “I want people to know that there is a lot of money being involved in politics when it shouldn’t be.”
He plans to make a Facebook group, a student organization and hold his first meeting this week to lay out a plan for the direction in which the Super PAC will move forward.
One issue that ‘Texans for a Better Tomorrow Tomorrow’ plans to tackle is the “quite backwards” views of Governor Rick Perry, according to Benefiel. “I want Rick Perry to know what Austinites think of him,” Benefiel said.
Benefiel plans to begin fundraising as soon as possible to get the organization off the ground and looks forward to raising awareness of the problems with Super PACs on the democratic process.
“Out of any college campus I can’t think of a better place than UT to do something like this. It is the bastion of liberalism in Texas,” Benefiel said.
