The big story for us is we've put it in the hands of a committee. We finished third in the conference. We'll see how much weight that carries.
The Longhorns had a chance to secure an NCAA playoff birth. They didn't take it.
Texas entered the Big 12 baseball tournament as the No. 3 seed, but suffered two upset losses that removed them from the tourney. Without recording a single victory, the Longhorns must now wait until Monday to see if they made the cut.
Texas' lackluster performance in the tournament will obviously hurt their chances, but the Horns are hoping their regular season record of 14-10 is enough for the selection committee.
"We knew the meaning of this going into it," Texas head coach Augie Garrido said. "The big story for us is we've put it in the hands of a committee. We finished third in the conference. We'll see how much weight that carries."
The Longhorns offense failed to show up at the tournament, plating only two runs total in the two games.
With two outs and two on in the ninth inning in the elimination game, Texas' Mark Payton swung through a 3-2 offering to end the tournament for the Longhorns.
"When you are not scoring runs, you start pressing," Payton said. "That's the hardest thing in baseball — not to press. It caught up to us pretty big this weekend."
If the Longhorns are selected for the NCAA tournament they will have to return to their small ball efforts. And with Augie Garrido at the helm this should be no problem.
The last time Texas was not selected for the NCAA tournament was in 1998.
