This kid is a football player to the 10th degree. He is an impact player.
Texas’ newest verbal commitment in the 2013 recruiting class is Cibolo-Steele High School safety Erik Huhn, and it comes as a bit of a surprise. The 6’2”, 215-pound defensive back made his choice after attending a Longhorn mini-camp with other fellow Longhorn commits. He reportedly performed well at the camp, making the decision to attend his favorite school that much easier.
“He has always wanted to go to Texas," said Mike Jinks, Huhn’s head coach. "He earned it. He went out there and busted his [butt]. He has offers from all over the country. He didn't have to do that.”
Jinks’ comment regarding Huhn’s national scholarship options is an accurate one. Oklahoma, Baylor and Texas Tech were all actively pursuing the four-star recruit, along with Georgia, Nebraska, and TCU, among others. UTEP is another school that had interest in Huhn. Erik’s brother Shane currently plays safety for the Miners.
Erik Huhn is the former high school teammate of current-Longhorn tailback Malcolm Brown. The two played together on Cibolo-Steele’s 2010 state championship team. Most recently, Huhn helped lead Steele back to the Texas state championship game in 2011, as they finished runner-up to Dekaney. He had eight interceptions during his junior year at Cibolo-Steele.
Many fans will be eager to witness what Erik Huhn can bring to Coach Akina’s secondary in 2013. You yourself can wait and see, or you can just take Mike Jinks’ word for it.
“This kid is a football player to the 10th degree,” said Jinks following the news of Huhn’s verbal commitment. “He is an impact player. I think Texas got lucky today."
With the recent decommittment of wide receiver Ricky Seals-Jones, Erik Huhnis the fourteenth Texas Longhorncommitment in a stacked 2013 recruiting class for Mack Brown.
