He's one of the only players I've ever seen who'll force the opponent to change their entire defense.
Cayleb Jones was one of the first recruits to commit to the ‘Horns 2012 recruiting class.
Jones committed to Texas the spring of his junior year, but was considered a lock for the Longhorns after his freshman year. Jones played his high school career at Austin High School in Austin, Texas and helped his team to the 2011 State playoffs despite a 2-8 regular season record.
However, being one of the top rated wide receivers in the country brought him numerous scholarship offers. He was recruited by the University of Miami, but seemed to lose interest when Randy Shannon was fired. He also got an offer from Auburn, who believed they had a chance to land him thanks to his cousin playing there.
Yet he still ended up in the Burnt Orange, where he belongs. He said of the University, "Texas is such a good school," he added. "I asked myself where I'd want to go if football wasn't in the picture and I couldn't pick a better place than UT."
Even with his talent, Jones wasn’t always the top receiver in the 2012 recruiting class.
Thomas Johnson was a verbal Longhorn commit, but instead of joining the University of Texas Johnson opted to sign with the Aggies on National Signing day. With the loss of Johnson to A&M, Jones will become an integral part of the 2012 class.
Jones will now be expected to make an immediate impact and will battle veteran receivers Marquise Goodwin and Mike Davis as well as fellow freshman Kendall Sanders and Marcus Johnson for targets behind sophomore receiver Jaxon Shipley.
With the accolades Jones has received in high school, he certainly has the ability to jump into a starting role.
Jones led his team back from a 21-7 deficit against Austin Anderson high school, netting 221 yards and scoring three touchdowns. This includes the game winning 11 yard touchdown as time expired for the 41-35 victory and the spot in the state playoffs, as well as a 76 yard touchdown return en route to being named the Texas FDAF 5A player of the week in week 10 of 2011.
"His talent is second to none," boast Austin head coach L.D Williams. "He's one of the only players I've ever seen who'll force the opponent to change their entire defense. His game-winner against Anderson just typified what a fierce competitor he is."
The problems in Jones’ games are apparent, and were put on display during his poor showing in the All American Bowl.
He is considered slow for his position barely breaking a 4.70 on his 40-yard dash. Jones has also endured several injuries throughout his high school career, such as turf toe and various injuries to his arms and legs. He suffered from two bone chips in his left ring finger while playing in a tournament in Florida so when the Maroons started up practice before his senior year he just caught passes thrown in his direction with his right hand. “I’m not even trying to catch with my [left] hand, because I don’t want to mess it up,” he said.
He does have great hands, and if the quarterback play can stabilize while he is on the 40 Acres, he should be able put them on display and rack up plenty of receptions. His 229 catches in his 28 game high school career is a tribute to this, as he finished his high school career amongst the leaders in Texas High School football history in that department. He also does a great job getting up in the air, to pull in tough passes against defenders.
Jones has showcased the ability to make plays after the catch, though he doesn’t have the speed to blow by defenders. He is very consistent on catching deep balls and can use a few moves to make the first would-be tacklers miss.
Plays like the game-winner against Anderson make it seem that Jones should make an impact for the ‘Horns from day one. Jones’ success will be crucial for an offense searching for its identity in the passing game.
